A prisoner has received further jail time for obstructing a prison officer who was trying to deal with an incident.

Patrick Domanic Waretini pleaded guilty to assaulting a prison officer when he appeared in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday.

On June 22 Waretini held the vest of a prison officer who was trying to deal to an incident.

His lawyer Anna Brosnahan said he had immediately pleaded guilty.

"It is simply the defendant trying to hold the prison officer back."

Judge Philip Crayton sentenced Waretini to four weeks imprisonment.
