The award-winning Calvino Trio is fast gaining an international reputation as a piano trio to watch.
In July they perform in seven New Zealand centres as part of Chamber Music New Zealand's 2016 Encompass Series.
Their concert in Whanganui is presented by Chamber Music Wanganui in association with the Foundation Music School, Wanganui Collegiate School.
The Calvino Trio members met at the International Musicians' Seminar in England in 2013, and decided to form a trio. In 2014 they were awarded first prize at the Jeunesses Musicales Suisse Competition. In 2015 further successes included receiving first prize at the Orpheus Swiss Chamber Music Competition, and an invitation to represent the Musikhochschule Basel at an international chamber music festival in Portugal.
The trio members hail from three different continents: Sini Simonen [violin] from Finland; Alexandre Foster [cello] from Canada; and Jun Bouterey-Ishido [piano] from New Zealand.
Mr Bouterey-Ishido will be familiar to audiences from the concert stage and his competition successes, including first prize at the 2008 Kerikeri International Piano Competition. Since then his studies have taken him to the Liszt Academy, Budapest and to Stuttgart, where last year he graduated with Distinction from the Konzertexamen [concert artist] programme, receiving mentoring from Peter Nagy and Kirill Gerstein.
The Calvino Trio will perform in Whanganui on July 6 at 7.30pm, at the Prince Edward Auditorium, Wanganui Collegiate. The concert will include music by Beethoven and Schumann, as well as a mystery piece by Hungarian composer Gyorgy Kurtag, which asks for the pianist to use the "super-mute" middle pedal on an upright piano.
