Last week the Taranaki Centre hosted the North Island Sheepdog Trial Championships at the Eltham-Takau sheep dog trial grounds at Mangamingi.

The Taranaki Centre, one of the smallest centres in the country, did a magnificent job conducting the event. The weather was mild and sunny except on Thursday, when it rained heavily in the morning.

Two-hundred dogs competed in each event, and there was a good contingent of Southerners.

Wanganui Centre triallists Marcus Totman from the Omatane-Kawhatau club won the straight hunt with Meg, and Dave Stuart from the Ruahine club was second in the zig-zag hunt with Turk.

Both these young men are making a real name for themselves. Dave Stuart won the NZ zig-zag title at Moawhango last year and also placed in the South Island champs. Dave with Gus and Marcus with Zac both placed second and fourth respectively in the straight hunt at the Taumaranui North Island champs in 2014.

Wanganui heading dogs featured in the longhead at Eltham - Paul Evans and Bryte from the Ohingaiti Club were sixth, and Graham Wellington and Rachel from the Parapara-Makirikiri club were seventh qualifiers, but jumped up to second with a very good run in the final.

The New Zealand Sheepdog Trial Championships start at Omarama on May 30.
