Sir Jerry Mateparae is expected to be named as our next High Commissioner to London.

Newstalk ZB political editor Barry Soper believes the Government has been in talks with the outgoing Governor-General, who has expressed an interest in a life after Government House.

Sir Jerry's five-year term finishes in August, while London incumbent, Sir Lockwood Smith, sees his term finish later this year.

There was speculation that the job would go to the current Speaker David Carter, but it was reported that Winston Peters made it clear if National wanted his support after the next election then they had to count Mr Carter out.

It is believed Mr Peters would have no objection to Sir Jerry.
