A truck driver likely fell ill before crashing into someone's front yard in Whanganui East yesterday.

The 52-year-old man was driving on Ikitara Rd when his truck went through a fence, stopping short of hitting the neighbour's house.

St John duty manager Trudy Taylor said the man "appears to have had a medical event", but he was not injured in the crash.

He was taken to hospital under status 4 condition, but Ms Taylor said he was walking, talking, and "happy".

Another neighbour said he did not see the crash happen, but heard a bang and felt the ground shake.

He said it was normal for the ground to shake a bit when trucks went up and down the street, but this one was stronger.

A man living across the road also described hearing a louder bang than usual.
