Soprano Boom lands $5000 scholarship

Soprano Eliza Boom, 24, was the New Zealand Opera School student named winner of the Sister Mary Leo Scholarship.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa presented the $5000 scholarship to an Eliza on Saturday night at a party after the New Zealand Opera School concert Great Opera Moments 2016 at the Royal Wanganui Opera House.

Over the past three years she has been the winner or finalist of many aria competitions including NZ Aria Rotorua, Christchurch, Auckland, Whangarei, Te Awamutu and Hamilton Arias. Waikato University Hilary Scholar.

Baritone Jarvis Dams, 24, was awarded the Bryan Wyness trophy, a special trophy presented to the student who has embodied the spirit of the school.

The trophy is in memory of former chairman of the New Zealand Opera School board, the late Bryan Wyness.
