A Wanganui man who carried a baton in his car while drink-driving has been sentenced to community work.
Shamon Barker-Pehi admitted drink-driving, possession of an offensive weapon and unlicensed driving.
Police were called to a London St address where they saw Barker-Pehi leaving before losing him.
He drove to the Aramoho shopping centre.
"Once parked the defendant jumped out of the car and ran towards police," Sergeant Stephen Butler told Whanganui District Court.
Barker-Pehi then dropped a metal baton by the rear of the vehicle. He was located by a police dog handler.
He blew 855mg alcohol per litre of breath.
"He shouldn't have been driving and he certainly shouldn't have had a baton in his possession," defence lawyer Anna Brosnahan said.
Judge David Cameron sentenced Barker-Pehi to 80 hours' community work each on the drink-driving and offensive weapon charges and disqualified him from driving for six months.
