During an argument with his mother, Eden Waitai ripped the phone out the wall and kicked dents in his mother's car.
Waitai was at his mother's house on August 19 when the pair began arguing, Judge Lynne Harrison said in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday.
"She went to phone your father to speak with him, you were also handed the telephone to speak with your father," Judge Harrison said.
Waitai then threw the phone on the ground, smashed it, and pulled the cord out of the wall socket before heading outside and kicking the victim's car, leaving dents in it.
Waitai pleaded guilty to wilful damage, and had a Restorative Justice conference with his mother.
Judge Harrison said Waitai's mother accepted his apology and also asked that he forgive her.
"You have accepted that you need an anger management programme."
Defence lawyer Harete Hipango said reparation had already been paid.
Waitai was sentenced to 80 hours of community work and nine months of supervision.
