A unique Wanganui house is for sale for the first time in its 66-year history.
The concrete tank house - known as the Roundhouse - in Gonville Ave is due to be sold at auction next month by Ray White Real Estate.
Walter Larsen built the house with his sons John, Cyril, Keith and Peter, for John and wife Jean to live in.
Walter was the founder of W Larsen & Son, a Heads Rd business that manufactured water tanks and reservoirs, and that business inspired him to build the house.
Mr and Mrs Larsen have both died and the remaining Larsen family members no longer live in the house.
The house features a large, round concrete tank with several tanks grouped around it.
In an interview with the Wanganui Chronicle in 2009, John Larsen said the house was built on the same principle as the concrete circular tank.
"Part of the reasoning was that it would need fewer repairs, provide greater floor space and could be built at less cost than conventional designs and construction of the day - it all proved to be right."
Some rooms in the house are almost completely circular, while others have a more conventional design but with gently curving walls.
Hans Vanderschantz from Ray White said the house had been on the market for two weeks and would go to auction at 2pm on October 7. The capital value of the house is $150,000.
"We decided to take it to auction because it's so unique. There's already been quite a lot of interest in it," Mr Vanderschantz said.
"We think it could be used in several ways - with a little bit of maintenance it could be an ordinary family home, or it would make a great art gallery or even a little cafe."
Mr Vanderschantz said there were a few other unusual houses in Wanganui but none were built from concrete tanks.
The house has three bedrooms, one bathroom and a single garage.
