Toni Wakeling was not interested in seeing her freshly-shaven head.
"I'm just thinking about the $1600 I've raised for a family that needs it," she said.
Supported by family and friends, Ms Wakeling had her hair shaved off yesterday at her workplace, Crombie Lockwood.
Ms Wakeling was inspired to shave her hair after hearing the story of 18-month-old Riays Asiata from Upper Hutt who has no kidneys. Riays was diagnosed with a type of rare kidney cancer called Wilms tumour when she was 9 months old, and will be on dialysis until she is five, when it is hoped she can have a transplant.
Riays has to have regular treatment in Auckland, meaning her family is often apart, and struggles for money.
Ms Wakeling wanted to help someone and was "moved" when she heard Riays' story through a relative.
"Even if the amount I manage to raise relieves some financial stress just for a short time then I would feel it was all worth it."
Ms Wakeling also wanted to teach her two young sons about "giving to others not to receive anything in return".
Ms Wakeling said she wanted to thank everyone who had supported her.
