Mayor Annette Main has lifted the state of emergency for the Wanganui District as at 12 noon Thursday, 2 July 2015.
The emergency status has been in place since 4pm on Saturday, June 20, after the district experienced a massive amount of localised rainfall resulting in flooding. The Whanganui River overtopped the stopbanks in the urban area.
"We have spent the last couple of weeks ensuring the safety of everyone affected by the floods and beginning to deal with the enormous impact on our community," Ms Main said.
"We are now fully in the 'recovery' phase which means that, while we will continue to support those worst affected by this event, we need to start getting back to 'business as usual' and dealing with the challenges that presents for our social wellbeing as well as our infrastructure and services.
"We have a recovery team in place to work through the issues. We all need to understand that this will take some time and while many of us are able to continue with life as normal, for other people the effects of this event will be long-term. We all need to support each other as our district begins the recovery process."
The recovery team is based at the Wanganui District Council building in Guyton Street and can be contacted on phone 349 0001.
