Wanganui's St John ambulance now has eight extra safety helmets - thanks to local motorcycle enthusiasts.
The helmets were bought with money raised by the Wanganui branch of the Ulysses Club of New Zealand from its annual Anzac Day ride.
The 82 riders and pillion passengers covered about 100 kilometres on Anzac Day, visiting war memorials at Brunswick, Maxwell, Waverley, Patea and Hawera, ending their odyssey at South Taranaki RSA.
The event raised almost $800 and was boosted by money from the Mayhem in May Rally organisers. That enabled them to buy the specially-designed helmets, manufactured at Pacific Helmets in Heads Rd.
St John manager Trudy Taylor said the helmets would offer extra protection for ambulance staff when dealing with high-risk incidents - one example of which was the late deployment of vehicle air bags.
Ride organiser Lance Nixon expressed the Ulysses Club's thanks to the motorcycle community for their support.
