Several roads in and around Wanganui are in for a summer spruce-up.
New Zealand Transport Agency regional journey manager Delany Myers said the work would happen over the next few months.
"We do this work in sections to ensure the work is evenly spaced out and doesn't cause too much disruption at once," Mr Myers said.
"Pot holes, cracked roads and slippery surfaces that have lost their skid resistance can increase the risk of crashes and injuries. Resurfacing the roads makes them good as new again by restoring the properties that make them safe to drive on, such as friction."
He said the aim was to cause as little disruption as possible.
"While we know that roadworks can be dusty, noisy and generally a bit of a pain, drivers will have better, safer roads once this work is done."
Mr Myers said despite the roads being used by holidaymakers, summer was the best time for the work to be done.
"We have to do much of our work during daylight when warmer temperatures and dry air help the new seal stick to the road surface," he said.
"The traffic is spread more evenly across the day, so we get less congestion from roadworks in January."
He said slower speed limits were there to protect the new road surface, drivers and workers. Summer road works:
-SH4 Wanganui Urban: Anzac Parade will get significant remedial works in late January, correcting unsatisfactory work from the previous year.
-SH4 North of Wanganui: South of Raetihi on January 12 - 18 and close to Wanganui January 19-25.
-SH3 North of Wanganui: Work is now under way or due to start at William Birch Pool, Kai Iwi by the school and overbridge, North of Blueskin Rd, North of Airport Rd, South of Marahau Rd, Rangitatau East Rd.
