Ariana Hansen of Taihape is a cancer survivor, a wife, mum, singer and now a long-distance cyclist.
When she bought her daughter a bike two years ago she started cycling as well.
Then it was as though something jumped out of the computer screen at her one night saying you have to do this ... the 200km cycle Conquer Cancer ride around Auckland in November ... enter.
"I was was just cycling round with my daughter so I thought if I was going to do this ride I'd better get serious and Taihape is a great place to get serious on a bike with all the hills and countryside."
Ariana was hit with throat cancer five years ago, had chemo, radiation and surgery and was convinced she would never sing again.
She couldn't sing for two years, then her voice slowly came back. With all that misery behind her, the flashing message urging her to do the Conquer Cancer bike ride suddenly seemed the right thing to do. "Then I could tick it right off my bucket list."
She asked around all her friends but no one would join her on the big ride on November 15 and 16 starting in Orakei on the first day then biking out from Pukekohe the next day.
"I couldn't believe that not one of my friends would join me and realised I was totally on my own."
To enter the special ride the cost to each rider was $2000.
So Ariana decided the only way to raise the funds was to get her friends together in a one-night concert and they couldn't refuse.
On Saturday, November 8, at the Taihape Rugby Club the show "Getting the Girls Out" will feature Ariana and her six singer friends. Already the tickets have nearly sold out.
"I'm so pleased. It will be a good night - we'll have rock, jazz classics, show songs there will be a bit of everything for everyone.
"I just know it will be a sell-out ... good on us girls."
