Two Wanganui young achievers were presented with cheques by Mitre 10 Mega Wanganui owners Hayden and Sarah Gibson last week.
Speed skater Rebecca Smith 17 and sprint kayaker Toby Brooke, also 17, each received a $2000 cheque towards the cost of attending overseas competitions in their respective sports.
" I am going to Argentina next week to compete in the World Championships of Roller Speed Skating in Rosario, so this has come at just the right time for me" said Rebecca.
Rebecca will compete in the Junior Women's 19 and under class at the championships along with another young local skater Jessica van Bentum.
Toby Brooke is an international competitor, winning 2014 junior athlete of the year for sprint racing and competing in the world championships in Hungary last July.
Mitre 10 Mega Wanganui owners, Hayden and Sarah Gibson said they had a hard decision this year with around 20 worthy applicants.
"Being Wanganui, we always seem to get young achievers in the rowing category, last year we had a kayaker and a cellist" said Mr Gibson.
Young Achiever scholarships are an annual award with two recipients selected each year - applicants must be from the Wanganui region, be under 28 years of age and have proven ability in the arts or sports.
The Gibsons say they recognise the deep commitment, sacrifice, and financial burden that is part of the quest for excellence, and they have instigated two scholarships.
"Mitre 10 Mega Wanganui, which is Wanganui owned and operated, has always been indebted to the people of Wanganui for their loyal support.
"This investment in the young people of our city and district is our 'thank you' to a wonderful community" said Mrs Gibson.
