Sex offender Stewart Murray Wilson goes before the parole board at Whanganui Prison tomorrow morning.
If granted parole, Wilson (pictured) may move back to the house in the grounds of the prison at Kaitoke.
Yesterday, mayor Annette Main said Wanganui people shouldn't be worried at the prospect of Wilson getting parole, adding that he had previously been held on parole under "strict conditions in a house".
"While we do not know what the decision of the parole board will be, we do know that this particular offender will never be released without extremely strict conditions," Ms Main said.
"We also know that when released previously on parole, his breach of a parole condition meant he was swiftly returned to prison."
Wilson was jailed for 21 years in 1996 after being convicted on 22 sex charges against women and children between 1971 and 1994.
In September 2012 he was paroled to a house just outside the Whanganui Prison grounds. He was back in jail in February 2013 for breaching conditions.
Ms Main said the community safety group, formed by herself and led by councillor Philippa Baker-Hogan, was "confident it can work alongside any concerns that may arise within our community should the parole board decide to house Mr Wilson on Whanganui Prison grounds".
The mayor urged anyone with concerns about family safety to contact these support agencies: Police, phone 111; Women's Refuge Whanganui, phone 344 2204, Wanganui Safe & Free, phone 343 3416; Family Works, phone 345 6681 and Relationships Aotearoa, phone 348 0027.
