Some of them have firm views, others are not so sure ... some have enrolled and others intend to.
But either way they're young men who will be exercising their vote for the first time in the general election next month.
The Chronicle caught up with five first-timers who are enrolled on the Ag Challenge carpentry course on No 3 Line.
Twenty-year-old Ashley Hika will head to the polling booths on September 20. He has already enrolled and will be voting in the Whanganui electorate.
"I'm going to be voting, definitely," Mr Hika said.
"I want to have my say in politics and get my vote in because it matters. I have my views and I think there's a candidate who deserves my vote," he said.
He hasn't decided if his candidate vote and party vote will go to the same party but his decision will be based on the best policy " and what I think is right".
Paris Peeti, aged 18, is yet to enrol but he says he will have come election day.
"I'll probably enrol in the Whanganui electorate because I'm a local.
"I've always wondered what the voting was about and I've wondered why people vote."
This time he'll be finding out by doing some reading between now and September 20.
Morgan Katene's name is now on the Maori roll.
"I haven't decided who I'll vote for yet but I'm interested in what it's about so I'll find out," the 18-year-old said.
"My vote doesn't seem much up against the 100,000 or whatever other voters there are but it still counts."
Levi Chadfield, aged 19, has enrolled but could not remember which roll.
"It's important people my age use their vote. If you want to have a say at this age you've got to."
Mr Chadfield said his parents hadn't influenced him to any degree beyond suggesting he needed to use his franchise when he turned 18.
Te Arepa Whareaitu, 20, "thinks" he's enrolled and is pretty sure it's on the general roll.
"I haven't made my mind up about who I'll vote for or what party either," Mr Whareaitu said.
"I'm not really a politics man - I don't really get into that stuff.
"I'll definitely vote but I'm just not sure who for yet - at the moment I'm listening."
