A formal opening is being planned for a Rangitikei bridge - 110 years after it was built.
The Mangaweka Bridge off State Highway 1 just outside Mangaweka, dates back to 1904.
Paul Eames of Heritage Mangaweka said the bridge, which spans a picturesque bend in the Rangitikei River, was supposed to be opened in September 1904 by the then premier, Richard Seddon.
"But there had been some unusual weather that week and the party from Wellington couldn't get through."
Extensive research by Heritage Mangaweka found no record of a formal opening.
"It was my idea to have an opening for it now - better late than never."
It was planned to hold the opening in September, on the same date it was supposed to be opened in 1904, but that was scrapped because it would clash with the general election on September 20.
A date has not yet been finalised, but it is likely to be next summer.
Mr Eames said the cantilever bridge had been an engineering feat for the early 1900s.
"It's a unique design, and very popular with engineers."
