Aramoho School's new principal had a special Cook Island-style welcome to her new role yesterday.
Born And Raised Pasifika childcare centre - which occupies a corner of Aramoho School - put on a colourful welcome for Raena Mead, with singing, dancing and prayers.
Born And Raised Pasifika's kaumatua, Tom Webb, said Cook Islanders recently celebrated their independence from New Zealand, which happened on August 4, 1965.
"We have had a week of celebrations and this is the end of our celebrations, the big wrap-up."
Mrs Mead told the students, teachers and elders that she was delighted by the warm welcome. She was pleased to be associated with Aramoho School.
"I plan to keep much of what [former principal] Henry Ngapo has built up here, while introducing some new ideas of my own," Ms Mead said.
The celebrations ended with a performance by two Cook Island dancers, and a meal.
