A group of young people will be frantically making a film in Wanganui this weekend - and they don't know yet what it will be about.
Led by aspiring filmmaker Costas Thrasyvoulou, and aided by copious cups of coffee from the Big Orange and Rapido cafes, the group is competing in the V48Hours film competition.
They find out at 7pm tomorrow what the film's genre is, and they have to have to hand it over by 7pm on Sunday.
They will also have to include a certain character with a certain personality trait, a certain prop and a certain line of dialogue - all unknown as yet.
The competition is sponsored by the energy drink V.
Mr Thrasyvoulou has competed in the contest three times - but this is his first try in Wanganui. It's his home town, he knows it well and said the variety of locations and lack of crowds would give him an advantage.
His team, Primer Grey Productions, includes other Wanganui residents Jessica Kidd and Theo Taylor.
Film had an early appeal to Mr Thrasyvoulou, who studied it at Victoria University to honours level. He's now working part-time at the Big Orange cafe and spends the rest of his time working towards other film projects in Wanganui.
The film that Primer Grey Productions will make this weekend will be one of hundreds made all over New Zealand and all vying for a range of prizes mainly consisting of filmmaking gear.
Each film can be up to seven minutes long and will be screened in the Wellington heats of the competition. It can then be uploaded to a website for viewing. See www.v48hours.co.nz/2011/
