Kiwi-born musician Vanessa McGowan now makes her home in Nashville Tennessee working as a freelance bassist, backing vocalist and session musician.
Known for her work with guitarist, vocalist and acclaimed songwriter Cy Winstanley as the Tattletale Saints, McGowan has now teamed up with Tennessee-born couple Ben DeBerry and Dorothy Daniel to tour New Zealand as The Danberrys.
Described as "a rhythmically seductive and emotionally connecting band", the Danberrys will play at the Whanganui Musicians Club next month with the support of the Sarjeant Gallery.
They've built a special indie-folk vibe around Dorothy's luxuriously smoky voice and Ben's intricate acoustic guitar flatpicking, with a sound drawing influences from bluegrass, country, blues, and the funk/soul traditions.
The Danberrys' show takes the listener through the near limitless nature of the Americana genre.
All three of the band's albums have been nominated for a number of Independent Music Awards, including Best EP, two nominations for Best Americana Album, and a recent 2016 win in the Best Bluegrass Song category.
The Danberrys: Friday December 8, 7.30pm at the Musicians Club, 65 Drews Ave. Tickets $20, Gallery Friends & Stars $18; purchase from Sarjeant on the Quay or by phoning 349 0506. Cash bar available 7 to 7.30pm & during the interval.
