Women bring Opaki home

Tennis

Opaki scored a narrow 5-4 win over Gladstone in their Wairarapa regional one tennis fixture at the weekend.

It was the strength in their women's section which was the catalyst to the Opaki victory. Katie Wyeth and Charlotte Mossman both won their singles matches, despite spirited challenges from Sandra McNab and Phillipa Dalgleish. But to the credit of McNab and Dalgleish, they prevailed in the doubles, which went to three sets.

In the men's section, it was 2-2 in the singles with Alistair McWilliam and Bruce Patrick doing the business for Gladstone and Chris Davidson and Jon McNab likewise for Opaki, and the men's doubles were also shared.

Scores, Opaki names first:

Men's singles: Stu Wyeth lost to Alistair McWilliam 4-6, 5-7; Chris Davidson beat John Gordon 6-4, 6-3; Jon McNab beat David Heard 6-0, 6-0; Greg Jolliffe lost to Bruce Patrick 4-6, 4-6.

Women's singles: Katie Wyeth beat Sandra McNab 7-5, 7-5; Charlotte Mossman beat Phillipa Dalgleish 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Men's doubles: Wyeth and Davidson beat McWilliam and Gordon 6-2, 6-4; McNab and Jolliffe lost to Patrick and Heard 7-5, 4-6, 2-6.

Women's doubles: Wyeth and Mossman lost to McNab and Dalgleish 6-3, 5-7, 4-6.
