Zac CaldwellA sparkling unbeaten 156 by Zac Caldwell laid the foundations for the 123-run win secured by Wairarapa over Wanganui on the opening day of the Central Districts under-15 cricket tournament at Rathkeale College.
Caldwell's willingness to take the battle to the bowlers was always evident and he scored at better than a run a ball, his 156 coming from 129 balls and including 22 fours and one six.
Wairarapa reached 297-8 in their 50 overs with Nathan Elliott (35), Jack Forrester (26) and Brad Griffith (27) giving Caldwell solid support.
Wanganui was all out for 174 in reply with Cole Freeman being the mainstay of an accurate Wairarapa attack. He finished with 4-52 from his 14 overs while Guy Percy took 1-20, Gus Wakeling 1-23 and Jack Forrester 2-26.
It was a different story for Wairarapa on the opening day of the Central Districts under-17 tourney in Napier where they lost to Taranaki by eight wickets.
Batting first, Wairarapa made 196 and it was Thor Crombie who led the way. His 75 came off 88 balls and included 11 fours. Lucien Burt (25) and Josh Pepperell (16) were the next highest scorers. Taranaki reached 200 for the loss of two wickets with Jack Wakeling taking 1-43 and Josh Pepperell 1-41.
