A woman has died and another is seriously injured after a two-car crash on a bridge near Eketahuna this morning.
The two women were travelling in the same car when they crashed into another car and became trapped on the Anzac Bridge on State Highway 2, south of Eketahuna and just north of Pukaha Mt Bruce.
The driver of the other vehicle escaped uninjured.
Police were now notifying the dead woman's next of kin.
Emergency services, including three fire and three ambulance crews, were called to the scene, along with the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter and the Life Flight Trust's Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
Driving conditions in the area were bad with rain, a witness has told the Dannevirke News.
Police had also received a report of a 35km diesel spill on the road between Mt Bruce and Pahiatua. It was still a hazard and motorists were urged to drive slowly in the area and take extra care.
The road was closed for nearly four hours and diversions were in place via Opaki Rd and Morrisville, causing lengthy delays.
The transport agency reopened the road just before midday.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
