A couple has been airlifted to hospital after their date at Castlepoint went wrong.

The Life Flight Westpac rescue helicopter airlifted a middle-aged Wellington couple to Wairarapa Hospital yesterday afternoon after a motorcycle crash at Castlepoint.

The crash happened at the end of Jetty Rd near the chapel after the woman tried to ride the man's 1300CC Harley-Davidson, police said.

Police said the woman had grabbed the throttle, causing the motorcycle to veer across the road and into a bank.

The woman had a possible broken leg and the man was bruised and had some possible fractures.

It was believed the pair had been on a date at the time, police said.

The woman did not hold a motorcycle licence. It was not clear if charges would be laid at this stage.
