Two new electronic signs will inform drivers travelling to and from Martinborough of road closures in the area due to heavy rainfall - and of the alternative routes.
The road information signs were erected on Thursday and are situated on State Highway 53. One is on the outskirts of Featherston and the other is just out of Martinborough.
Another road information sign for Greytown is expected to be up before Christmas, said infrastructure and services manager Mark Allingham, from South Wairarapa District Council.
"South Wairarapa has intermittent problems with road closures, especially with the roads into Martinborough," he said.
"Depending on what roads are flooded at what time, it can be confusing for residents as well as non residents.
"The signs provide clarity for what routes are open when heavy rain and flooding happens."
He said the signs had been two years coming and would prove beneficial, especially during one of Martinborough's many festivals and events.
"They will be helpful for any tourists coming over the hill and if one road's closed it will supply the other options.
"It's good for civil defence and if we have an earthquake it allows people to know where to go."
Mr Allingham said the signs were fully automated and were controlled 24/7.
"We're also talking to the New Zealand Transport Agency about putting new directional signage on the routes," said Mr Allingham.
