They went up and they came back down again.
Correspondents to the Wairarapa Times-Age have asked why Masterton's entranceway pou, at either end of town on SH2, were stripped of their symbols since they went up in early February.
Apart from a north-west gale blowing off the coverings on one symbol, the public have yet to see the deliberately rusty metal icons, meant to represent Masterton's values and events.
Readers have wondered if the symbols were meant to be larger.
A comparison of the design photo with a picture of one of the symbols in actuality seems to suggest a size difference.
Masterton District Council spokesman Sam Rossiter-Stead said when the symbols went up, "it became clear that some of them needed adjustment to fully represent the original design".
He said a small number are being enlarged, but the older symbols will not be wasted.
"The smaller symbols have been incorporated into the design of the additional welcome signs which are being placed on some of the other routes into the town.
"We are working with our manufacturer to reposition the symbols as soon as possible."
