When a family has to deal with trauma, it can blow their world apart.
These are the words of Elaine Leggott of Wairarapa Care, who has set up a fundraising appeal for Caleb Skinner - the 2-year-old in Auckland's Starship Hospital suffering from serious head wounds after an alleged assault.
Mrs Leggott said she had to do something after hearing the news.
"The family's life will never be the same again, Caleb didn't ask for this to happen and now he's fighting for his life.
"It could have happened to your family - and then how would you feel," Mrs Leggott said.
She has teamed up with St Matthew's Parish Church to set up an account for donations.
The account is under the umbrella of the church, created by Wairarapa Building Society.
Rev Stephen Kimberley of St Matthew's Church said he wanted to do his best to help Mrs Leggott by being the "accountability bank" and organising the money side of the fundraising effort.
"I wanted to make sure it works for Elaine, who has come up with this brilliant idea."
