Teen killed in train collision

The girl killed in this morning's train crash in Carterton has been named as Grace Ellen Diedrichs from Carterton.

The 15-year-old died after the ute she was traveling in collided with a passenger train.

A 17-year-old boy who was driving the ute was taken to Wairarapa Hospital with serious injuries.

The police serious crash unit is investigating after the collision at a crossing on Wiltons Rd about 8.15am.

Road blocks have been set up at both ends of Wiltons Rd while a scene examination is conducted.

Police said the driver of the south-bound commuter train was ``extremely shaken''.

The driver was not injured and is being supported by police, Victim Support and KiwiRail.

Police said there was ``extensive damage to the vehicle from the impact of the train''.

The few passengers who were on the train at the time will be taken by bus to Wellington.

Police have appealed for information from anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the vicinity of the crash to contact Wairarapa Police on 06 370 0300.
