Smokin' tyres rule as burn out spectacle attracts plenty of fans

ABOUT 20 entrants from all over the North Island burnt rubber at the Masterton Motorplex burn-out competition held in Masterton on Saturday.

A "bloody good" turn-out of about 1000 people weren't bothered by the heat and watched the drivers compete in a variety of competitions, according to co-ordinator Bob Wilton.

The event was organised as a fundraiser for the organisation's $3 million drag strip project which is underway.

"But it was also something for the young people to do," he said.

Mr Wilton said competitors came from as far as Hawke's Bay, Wanganui and Wellington.

They were judged on things such as their handling skills and how much smoke they produced.

He was pleased with the weather conditions which blew the smoke away quickly.

There were a variety of winners over different categories, and Mr Wilton said they were still tallying up how much money was raised.

The event was held at Hood Aerodrome.
