Police will patrol beaches

As thousands flock to popular holiday destinations police and lifeguards will be patrolling beaches at summer hot spots to ensure everybody has a fun, safe time.

Police will be on patrol at Riversdale and Castlepoint beaches throughout the holiday period.

Wairarapa Area Commander Inspector Brent Register said one police officer would be stationed at Riversdale and Castlepoint between Christmas and New Year as usual.

"It's in recognition of the community and knowing that the population swells at the beaches.

"It's re-assuring the community that police will be available." Mr Register said the main issues which came up at the beach spots were the dangerous use of quad bikes and alcohol.

"It's the time and the season for people to drink, but we urge people not to drink in excess."

Riversdale Surf Lifesaving Club captain Mike Taylor said lifeguards would be on patrol at the beach full-time from tomorrow until the end of January.

"It's always good to swim where the lifeguards are," he said.
