Library users to do it all

Masterton library users will be able to issue their own books next year once a new system is introduced.

The RFID electronic tagging system lets people issue books themselves with their library card.

It also automatically records when they have been returned.

The new system will cut down queues and allow staff to spend more time helping borrowers.

Masterton Library manager Sandy Green said the library issued about 1000 items a day and was busier than ever.

"One of the issues we are facing is that the current system makes stock-taking a very long-winded process and the introduction of RFID will ensure that we are able to keep a far closer eye on which items we are holding at any time," she said.

"This will be of great benefit to our borrowers, both from Masterton and SMART users from around the region."

Staff must first put electronic tags on 61,000 library items.

The Masterton District Council made provision in the 2012-22 Long-Term Plan of $47,575 for the system, which should be in place from March.

Borrowers would still be able to have their books issued by staff members if required.
