Wairarapa's public transport users will have to pay higher fares from Monday.
Adult multi-trip tickets will increase by 3 per cent, and adult cash fares in Wairarapa will increase by 50c. Children's multi-trip tickets will also increase although one-zone fares will stay the same.
This means a bus trip from Martinborough to Masterton for an adult will go from $7.50 to $8, and a train trip from Masterton to Wellington will go from $17.50 to $18 if paid in cash. A Masterton to Wellington monthly train ticket will rise from $409.20 to $421.50.
Greater Wellington's Economic Wellbeing Committee chair Peter Glensor said commuters should consider using multi-trip tickets. "No one likes paying more but public transport users do need to contribute their fair share towards the costs which increase every year.
"Without relatively small and regular fare increases, we'd have to catch up with a really big fare increase in a few years' time. That's not acceptable; having small and regular increases is more manageable for most people, particularly regular users."
