A tradition in the building fraternity has been to shout refreshments when the roof goes on but, in the case of the old Featherston Post Office, the shout is more likely to be held when the roof is finally prised off the structure.
Contracting staff are dismantling the old post office to make way for a new multi-million-dollar Trust House supermarket. Chungs supermarket just to the north of the post office has already been demolished.
But the post office was always looked on as a challenge to demolition crews as it was built in the early days of the Cold War and was said to be of a standard to survive the impact of a nuclear blast.
