A 39-year-old woman has appeared in the Lower Hutt District Court after the body of her 11-month-old son was found in the Ruamahanga River in the Wairarapa.
The woman is charged with abandoning a child.
Police say they were alerted to the baby's disappearance by family members yesterday afternoon, when the woman returned to Lower Hutt from a trip to the Wairarapa without the child.
The woman, who has name suppression, has been remanded for two weeks, and will undergo a psychiatric assessment.
Police and a specialist dive team are continuing their search of the Ruamahanga River.
Detectives in Lower Hutt are also carrying out inquiries.
