The world's ageing population
The number of people aged 60 years and older has doubled since 1980 and is forecast to reach two billion by 2050 -- a fifth of the planetary total -- according to the World Health Organisation. Almost 400 million of these people will be aged 80 plus, the UN's health agency says.
