Sue Halliwell shares tips for an Alaskan campervan journey.
1. Avoid motorhome companies with no online reviews as their contracts may forbid online criticism, as AK Motorhomes' does. There'sareason for that. Enough said.
2. Pack layers of clothing for the changeable Alaskan weather, those you can strip or unzip being best.
3. Stock up at big supermarkets in the largertowns. Supplies elsewhere are limited and expensive.
4. Check the Kenai fishing regulations on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game website.
5. The US Wildlife Service advises that bears are seldom aggressive. However, to be on the safe side:
• Carry bear pepper spray as yourfirst line of defence.
• Stand your ground and make lots of noise.
• Don't climb a tree — both black and grizzly bears climb trees.
• Fight back if it attacks.
6. Only read the September 2015 National Geographic article on grizzly attacks on your return from Alaska, if ever.
