Pedras Salgadas Spa & Nature Park, Portugal

The architecturally-designed slate and wood tree houses in this beautiful park were constructed with sustainability and ecology in mind. The interiors may be stark, but it means there's nothing to detract from the houses' surroundings. A large window at the foot of the bed looks out across the forest, while a second — in the ceiling — allows visitors to star-gaze from their pillows.

If you like camping this spot will appeal. The lightweight, spherical tent suspended above the ground can accommodate up to two people and is accessed via a private bridge which crosses a stream. As with traditional camping, the ablutions are elsewhere, but if you really want to sleep in the trees, you won't find a better place.

This Scandinavian hotel takes tree-top dwelling to the next level, offering seven different tree rooms for guests to choose from. Each room features underfloor heating powered by locally-supplied green hydroelectric power and free WiFi. Sustainability was a key focus for the owners when planning their hotel and the architecturally-designed rooms that resemble a UFO, a bird's nest and a cone which changes colour, have cemented the remote spot's popularity.
