What was your greatest holiday?
In 2014, to New York. My best mate Dave's sister is an air hostess (are they still called that? [Travel Editor: Nope.]) and was on our flight so she looked after us on the flight over. Dave's other sister hooked us up with corporate-box tickets at Madison Square Garden for Knicks v Clippers. Yea. Corporate box. Madison Square Garden. And Dave's mate is a Michelin-star chef who opened a restaurant called the Musket Room. We ordered a five-course degustation but Chef Matt just hooked. Us. Up. Moral of the story: Travel with Dave.
And the worst?
I was 20 and accepted an invitation from an old flame in Australia to her 21st in Newcastle. So I dragged Dave (this is probably where Dave and I became really good mates) and Phil from drama school to come. We ended up flying straight into a drunken, dysfunctional, feuding bogan family's hot mess of screaming matches and rude, horrid personalities. However, we'd just done Shakespeare at drama school, so the highlight of the trip was us devising the finger-puppet version of The Winter's Tale.
If we bump into you on holiday, what are you most likely to be doing?
Eating or drinking. The best way to learn about a new culture is to ingest it.
If we could teleport you to one place in New Zealand for a week-long holiday, where would it be?
Whangapoua. It's just magic and New Chums Beach is on another level.
How about for a dream holiday internationally?
The United States. I'd love to motorcycle across the US and up to Alaska to see a cousin and stay in a glass igloo.
What's the dumbest thing you've ever done when travelling?
Taken a polar fleece to Sydney in summer and left my card in the ATM in Bali. Yes, the machine swallowed it.
Complete this sentence: I can't travel without ... money.
What's the best travel tip you've ever been given?
"Relax and the weed will always find you."
What's the best thing you've brought back from a trip?
I'm really not a bring-anything-home kinda guy. The mere thought that I may have to spend extra time at Auckland Customs explaining what I have, is enough to deter me from buying anything interesting to bring home.
Favourite airport to land at?
Changi Airport. It's a dream! Is it an airport or is it a mall with planes?
What's the next trip you've got planned?
Japan. I want to immerse myself in the culture that invented my favourite food.
