Being Diplomatic: Cuban Ambassador, Mario Alzugaray Rodriguez

Diplomats tell us what Kiwis need to know about their homelands.
Cuban Ambassador, Mario Alzugaray Rodriguez.
Cuban Ambassador, Mario Alzugaray Rodriguez.

The thing you probably know about my country is ... good music and salsa dancing, delicious rum and mojitos - as well as the best cigars in the world.

But the thing you really should know is ... that people are really friendly and represent the best resource of our country. Cuba is also a more-than-safe place, with a rich cultural tradition and a unique social environment in constant transformation.

Over there, we think Kiwis are ... easy-going, open-minded and very sociable people.

On a short visit, you should go ... dancing, share with local people, visit heritage cities and take a ride in a fancy, old Chevrolet.

On a longer visit, you should ... rent a car and go all around Cuba.

Our national sport is ... baseball.

The one food thing you really should try is... congri (rice with black beans), roasted pork, yucca, fried plantains or a fresh lobster selected directly from the sea by yourself.

Make sure you avoid ... postponing your trip to Cuba - and too-long sun exposure.

The weather is... warm and pleasant.

Best way to get around is ... by car.

A handy phrase you should know is ...
"Hola amigo, soy de Nueva Zelandia."
