1: Auckland Sea Kayaks
From the romantic sunset paddle to Rangitoto, complete with dinner and paddle back to the sparkling city lights to half-days, overnighters (spot the kiwis on Motuihe Island), these are our favourite kayak outings. You're in the hands of experienced sea kayakers who love conservation (and good food). Or reward yourself with the cute "Paddle to the Pub" kayak trip from Herald Island to the Riverhead Tavern, perfect for novice kayakers.
2: Puhoi River Canoes
Easy peasy river kayaking is safe enough for kids and novices, with a beaut 8km from the Puhoi village to the Wenderholm Regional Park. The trips are timed so the tides do the work. Add on more explorations, or just putter around the village and head back to the cheese cafe or pub. Spot native bush, mangroves, herons and the odd kookaburra.
3: Te Ara Moana
Auckland Council's sea going pathway links the bays of the south-eastern coast in a series of terrific day paddles or a five day excursion. One of the newer regional parks, Waitawa fronts on to four bays and has a purpose built kayak campground (plus mountain-biking, walking and more). Te Ara Moana starts at Omana, with stops at Duder, Tawhitokino, Tapapakanga and Waharau Regional Parks. Magic.
4: Waiheke Adventures
Circumnavigate the island with an experienced guide (return by shuttle), so you're paddling with the prevailing wind and tides. Stop at Fossil Bay, hike to lookouts and pa sites, enjoy beaches and mangroves, away from the summer crowds. If you're lucky, there are dolphins to spot.
