Day Walks of New Zealand: Canterbury and Kaikoura
by Mark Pickering
The latest book in the Day Walks series - which has already sold 40,000 copies - covers the amazing routes which can be walked in parts of Canterbury like Kaikoura, Hanmer Springs, Banks Peninsula, Arthurs Pass National Park and the Mackenzie Country.
Like the other books in the series, which are gradually covering the country, this one provides good basic information on each of 63 walks listed, including reasonably clear instructions on how to reach the start point, estimated walking time, an assessment of the level of effort required and a list of the main points of interest along the way.
The maps are a bit simplistic and the black and white illustrations don't do the scenery justice but the big plus of the fairly basic format is that the books are small and light enough to be easily carried in a day pack.
If you're heading for Canterbury and hope to do a bit of walking, this would be the ideal companion.
