At Easter the Central Otago skies buzz with vintage fighter aircraft and modern jets during Warbirds over Wanaka, April 2-4. The exciting aerial displays are complemented by land-based displays of vintage and military vehicles and machinery, trade exhibits, food and wine outlets.

Walkers' wonderland
Rotorua is the setting for the Rotorua Walking Festival, March 19-21. This non-competitive leisure walking event offers a 10km walk each day, plus a half and full marathon on Saturday, and 20km and 30km walks on Sunday. Short walks and entertainment are also on the programme.

Domain of delights
Graced by elegant Edwardian buildings dating from its heyday as a spa town, the Te Aroha Domain is a delightful setting for A Day in the Domain on March 21. There will be food stalls, arts and crafts, lots of entertainment and activities for all ages. Entry is free.

Up and away
Thirty colourful hot air balloons will brighten up the Waikato skies during Balloons over Waikato, March 24-28. The festival starts with a mass ascension at Hamilton Lake, and other events include a balloon-themed fun afternoon, a mass sunrise lift-off, and a street parade. A highlight is the Night Glow, a magical evening of glowing balloons, fireworks and music.

After the harvest
If you've always fancied treading the grapes after harvest, head to the Soljans Berba Harvest Festival at Soljans Estate, Kumeu, April 3-5. You can also indulge in free wine tasting, Croatian food and take a winery tour . Entertainment includes live music, Croatian folk dancing, face-painting and Easter eggs.
