If you feel inspired to climb a mountain this summer, join one of the open climbs to the 2518 metre summit of Mt Taranaki.
The Mt Egmont Alpine Club runs an open climb on February 2 while the Taranaki Alpine Club guides its climb on February 16. Numbers are limited so early registration is essential.
Ashburton goes country
Dig out your hats and picnic blankets and head to Ashburton for a real country treat on February 17. The Mid Canterbury Country Music Fete will feature a variety of country music, plenty of stalls, children's entertainment, food and refreshments. It's in the picturesque Ashburton Domain.

Clans of Coromandel
You don't have to be a Scot to enjoy a great day of family entertainment at the Paeroa Highland Games & Tattoo on February 9. Pipe bands and highland dancers are part of the line-up, along with an axemen's chopping carnival, caber tossing, mace flourishing and the Ode to the Haggis. It's at Paeroa Domain, 9am - 9pm and the Tattoo starts at 6.30pm.

Rock till you drop
Drag out your fifties gear and head to Hamilton Gardens for a night of rock 'n' roll at the SBS Mardi Gras on Friday, February 15. Various bands will be pumping out all the old rock 'n' roll favourites and there'll be rock 'n' roll dance exhibitions, the Wai Taiko Drummers and other vibrant performance groups. It starts at 6.30 at the Rhododendron Lawn and it's free.

Wellspring of music
The inaugural Korokipo Springs Contemporary Country Music Festival happens 1pm - on Waitangi Day, February 6, at Korokipo Springs in Hawke's Bay. The festival showcases top New Zealand artists in an attractive setting amid vineyards, orchards and rolling hills.
Festival-goers can bring picnics but not alcohol, which is available on site.
A supervised kid's zone will be provided. Entry $34 (adult), kids free if accompanied by an adult. Groups of 10 or more, $32 per adult.

The beautiful rural property La Casa Bella in Canterbury is the venue for the family-friendly Little River Music Festival, February 8-10.
As well as entertainment from a variety of bands, there'll be jam sessions and an open stage for musicians who want to perform. Camping is available and day and weekend passes can be purchased.
