The Whangarei District Council has delayed a decision to adopt parking charges in the Town Basin carpark. The council intends to introduce pay-and-display metered parking in the carpark for $2 an hour for a maximum of three hours.
It also proposes to make 21 carparks near the playground on the northern side of Reyburn House Lane free for an hour.
The adoption was the only item on the agenda of a council meeting yesterday but after some discussion about the hourly cost, and the idea of creating six 15-minute "drop-off" carpark spaces, a motion to let the item lie on the table was successful.
Lying an item on the table allows extra time for information to be gathered and brought back to the discussion.
An extraordinary council meeting has been called for 8am tomorrowto revisit the issue.
