A man has turned himself into police after a car ploughed into an Auckland cafe last night.
The crash occurred around 8pm when a car mounted the pavement and struck a stunned diner before continuing into the cafe in Titirangi.
The driver then reversed from the wrecked wall of the Hardware Cafe and left the scene.
A customer was taken to Waitakere Hospital with knee injuries, a cafe staff member said.
The car "came out of nowhere" according to witnesses, and crashed into the cafe where about a dozen diners were eating on a balmy evening.
Northern police communications shift Inspector Peter Raynes said a man turned himself in to the Henderson police station early today.
A 19-year-old man will appear in Waitakere District Court this week charged with careless or inconsiderate use of a motor vehicle and failure to stop or ascertain injury after a crash, a police spokeswoman said.
