A staff member is being supported by colleagues after a brazen gunpoint hold-up of The Warehouse in Henderson in the early hours of this morning.
The worker was leaving work around 12.30am when he was approached by two men in the carpark, police said.
One of the men was reportedly armed with a handgun.
Police said the staff member was then forced to take the men into the office and open the safe.
The two men escaped with what police described as "a quantity of cash", before fleeing in a silver sedan.
Police described one of the men as 165cm tall and of medium to large build.
He was wearing a black hooded jumper with a red pattern on the front, a sleeveless orange vest with silver markings, black gloves and full length black pants, police said.
The Warehouse worker was not hurt in the incident.
A forensic scene examination was carried out today and police said enquiries were ongoing.
The busy store was open for business today on Auckland Anniversary Day, but staff were being tight-lipped about the incident.
Enquiries were referred to head office.
"We're assisting police with their enquiries but are focused on taking care of our team member and their family, ensuring they recover well from this incident," Warehouse spokeswoman Julia Bell said.
"We'll release more details when it is appropriate to do so."
