The moody weather on Saturday did not discourage visitors attending Waihi A&P show.
The fair is an opportunity to promote agricultural excellence.
Young Gabriella Muller, from Rotorua, was pleased to be the local breed champion with her Holstein calf Ella.
"I am so happy as it is my first time doing the show.
"She [Ella] is very young, about three months, and she is my pet," she said.
Judge George Hiha was busy selecting the best hacking horse.
George from Huntly has been involved with the local fair since day one, he says.
"I remember years back when Marilyn Parker started in her role at the Waihi Agricultural and Pastoral Association as a secretary ... "
George used to be a rider for more than 35 years before he stopped after a back injury.
"I was good at horse jumping back in the day.
"Now my grandchildren are starting to ride too and I will soon buy them a pony."
He says that when judging a horse, good bones or type and temperament are part of the criteria.
Champion in several hack sections, including open hack and overall champion, was Peter Hill. Coming in second as Reserve champion was Harriet Redmond with her hacking horse. From the benches or in the ring, there was no lack of entertainment for animal lovers.
