The Country's Jamie Mackay caught up with the Mayor of the Waitomo District, Brian Hanna today to talk about a plan to erect a statue celebrating one of Te Kuiti's most famous residents - Sir Colin Meads.
Hanna says the statue is to pay tribute to Sir Colin, not only for what he's done for his community but also what he has done for New Zealand. The statue is planned to be unveiled in Te Kuiti on June 19 which is during the Lions tour.
The bronze statue is 9 foot tall and portrays "Pinetree" with rugby ball in hand. Fundraising has gone well so far but Brian says they still need help getting to the final sum.
You can find out more about the statue and how you can support on the Facebook page Meadsville here.
