Northland stock report
The frosts are getting closer, then you will see some brown looking kikuyu, otherwise most of the farm land is looking well; cattle numbers are still coming forward in good numbers for store cattle and feeder calves which are both selling well.
Dargaville Sale:
Dargaville had an outstanding good sale on Thursday, April 27 with 724 store cattle and 146 feeder calves.
Everything sold extra well. Good 2-year steers made $1230 to $1385. 18-month steers sold for $1155 then $1045 to $1050, down to $850 to $990 and 15-month steers fetched $1150 down to $795 to $840.
Good weaner steers made $835, then $700 to $790 down to $680 to $690. Weaner bulls made $625 to $680. 15-month heifers sold for $705 to $840. Weaner heifers sold for $804 to $835, then $720 to $740, down to $660 to $690. Light heifers made $550 to $580. Good calves made $300 to $390, then $230 down to $140 to $200.
Kauri Sale:
Kauri had another excellent entry of 438 feeder calves which sold very well, also a light entry of 165 mixed store cattle, which also sold well. 2-year steers sold for $1045 to $1210. 20-month steers sold for $1090 to $1325, down to $920 to $950 down to $835 to $885. Weaner steers made $855 to $985 then $710 to $725 and light steers $640 to $690. 20-month heifers made $1040 to $1070, then $915 to $980 down to $700.
Weaner heifers sold to $845, then $700 to $735 down to $620 to $645 and light heifers $550. Heavy bulls fetched $1625 to $1720. Good feeder calves made $340 to $380, then $300 to $330, medium calves made $220 to $280, light calves fetched $160 to $190 down to $100 to $170 then $60 to $90.
Wellsford Sale:
All cattle in strong demand at Wellsford on Tuesday, May 2, heavy ox made $2037 to $2458 (2.91c-3.01c) then $1209 to $1986 (2.96c-2.99c). Prime heifers sold for $1079 to $1723 (2.68c-2.96c) then $829 to $983 (2.19c-2.96c). Heavy prime cows made $1002 to $1536 (1.78c-2.03c) then $920 to $978 (1.89c-1.91c). Heavy bulls sold for $2029 to $2088 (2.46c-2.90c) down to $1416 to $2233 (2.75c-2.90c).
Sheep:
Prime lambs sold well with the tops for $108 to $122 down to $101 to $103 then $95 to $98. Good store lambs sold for $84 to $96 then $50 to $64 mixed age ewes sold for $90 to $92 then $83 to $92, then $46 to $58 down to $31 to $50.
Feeder calves:
The market was strong for the feeder calves with the tops selling for $300 to $325, then $200 to $285, down to $65 to $122.
Kaikohe Sale:
There was a definite easing of the market for the 900 cattle at Kaikohe on Wednesday. Steers were reasonably steady but the cows and weaner heifers were definitely back. Heavy 30-month steers - Charolais Whiteface, Angus and Hereford cross sold for $1150 to $1300 (2.90c-3.10c) to $1400 to $1690 (2.80c-2.90c) and Friesian cross steers $850 to $950 (2.40c-2.60c).
Other steers sold for $1030 to $1300 (2.77c-2.92c). 20-month steers made $980 to $990 (2.62c-2.84c) 20-month bulls sold for $1100 to $1250 (2.85c-2.90c) and mixed bulls $800 to $900 to $1170 (2.40c-2.50c). Weaner Hereford bulls made $800 to $900 also Angus and Whiteface (3.10c-3.20c).
Dairy beef Murray Grey, Whiteface and Friesian bulls made $470 to $600 (3.40c-3.70c). Weaner Gelbvieh steers made $970, Simmental $915 to $1000 and Devon Hereford $600 to $750 (3.40c-3.70c). 2-year heifers $1050 to $1150 (2.90c-3.00c), beef cross Galloway and Friesian heifers made $690 to $830 (2.50c-2.60c) with 20-month heifers $1070 to $1200 (2.74c-2.87c) then $800 to $850 (2.74c-2.92c).
Light heifers made $590 to $670 (2.10c-2.68c). Weaner Hereford Angus Murray Grey, Angus/Friesian heifers (3.00c-3.60c). VIC Friesian cows made (1.70c-1.75c). Cows and Calves fetched $730 to $1010 (2.99c-3.47c). Empty Friesian cows made $900 to $985 (1.90c-1.99c) then $800 to $845 (1.60c-1.77c) down to $550 to $700 (1.50c-1.60c) and $500 to $600 (1.53c-1.63).
